Creating Memorable Characters

Flat characters are authors’ worst nightmare. If you fail to build strong characters, no matter how interesting the plot is, you will lose the reader. It is simple to avoid that. Take your time to build and develop intense and complex characters. But always remember to create them simple in their complexity. 

Your characters simulate real people. In real life, no one is perfect and so are your characters. They have flaws, quirks, they lie, break the law and misbehave. They are vulnerable, they fail, they get defeated, but most important, they get back on their feet, try harder and fight. 

Be creative about your character. Even though they simulate real people, they are not.  Readers have had enough of the sweet girl living next door and the hero who can’t get over his first love. Even if you are modeling your characters after real people, make them more interesting, even the villains. Most importantly, they all have goals and strive to reach them.

Once you give life to your characters, they will help you write their stories for them.
